Teacher, Portuguese and Elementary

1. To be an example of Jesus' love and teachings to others through your personal life, dress and relationships;
2. To mentor others to grow in their relationship with God and to make a decision to follow Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.
3. To be involved in all aspects of teaching elementary school including: lesson planning, instruction, Bible-based spiritual education, English-language instruction, classroom management, supervision, extracurricular activities, grading, and administration;
4. To possibly teach English language (ESL) classes or other classes to children as needed.
5. To regularly attend, participate in the local SDA Sabbath School and Worship Services;
6. To be prepared to participate and lead in ministry and in programs of the local SDA Church;
7. To visit and train others in the outlying districts of Timor-Leste; and
8. All other duties as assigned.

Please note: as this is a new school, annual enrolment is still being determined. As such, specific grade-level assignment will be made just before the beginning of the school year when you arrive; you may end up teaching different/additional classes than first thought. Flexibility is needed!


  • Previous experience in working with children and leading some form of children's program or ministry is required. Previous experience teaching elementary school and/or English as a Second Language to children is preferred.

Acceptable Dress: Modest attire. Teachers are required to wear a uniform 4 days a week. The other days teachers must dress as described below. WOMEN: Work—modest blouse/collared shirt, dress pants (NO JEANS)/loose fitting skirt/dress below the knee; Church—modest blouse, loose fitting skirt/dress below the knee. [Please wear slips under skirts and dresses.] Recreation—modest knee-lenth shorts, T-shirts; shorts & shirt required for swimming.

MEN: Work—collared shirt, long professional pants (NO JEANS); Church—dress pants, collared dress shirt. Recreation—modest shorts/T-shirts, modest swimwear.

Unacceptable Dress: Tight and/or short shorts, clothing with low cleavages, short/sheer blouses or dresses, T-shirts with negative slogans/logos, bikinis or revealing swimwear. Jewelry, dreadlocks, piercings, visible tattoos, extreme haircuts/styles. Please do not bring jewelry.


Shared accommodation in concrete building. Includes basic furniture, shared AVS kitchen, shared AVS bathroom, fridge, stove, fans or A/C, 220V electrical. One set of towels and one set of bedding is provided. Basic cooking and eating utensils are provided. Basic housekeeping supplies are provided. Beyond these things, the volunteer is responsible to bring or purchase anything else he/she may want or need.

Special arrangements need to be made for married volunteers prior to approval as there is currently no married volunteer housing.

Volunteer needs to raise funding to cover travel and expenses for both the required AVS orientation AND travel from the AVS orientation to Dili, Timor-Leste (unless the volunteer has committed to teaching at TAIS for 2 full school years). 



Monthly Living Allowance  -  $250.00

The monthly allowance stated above is for volunteers that have not yet completed an under-graduate degree, and is the amount that they will receive after tithe, tax, and housing costs have been deducted. Volunteers with an under-graduate degree, teaching degree, or willing to stay for a longer term will be given an increased monthly allowance. Please enquire for more information ([email protected]).

The monthly allowance is enough to cover food and other monthly expenses if the volunteer chooses to live simply and eat primarily a local diet, rather than buying all the imported food, eating out regularly, or spending a lot of money/time on internet. It is optional to fundraise an additional $100-$150USD/month for more comfortable living.

After you have been voted into this position by the General Conference, your volunteer status will be changed to "Assignment Voted." You must then provide your travel itinerary to: 1) your place of service, 2) your Home/Sending Division so they can request insurance for you, and 3) your sending organization (if you have one).

Original criminal record check and health clearance letter MUST be acquired shortly before departure in home country. Volunteers may be required to have a physical exam to receive their work visa in country—this includes blood test (including STDs and HIV) and chest x-ray. To acquire a work visa, you will also need to bring all original diplomas and certificates you have (high school diploma, training certificates, undergrad degrees, etc.), as well as, an authenticated/notorized copy of your passport, criminal record, and medical report.

Volunteers are welcome to apply for an extension to stay longer after each 2-year term of service.

The Southern-Asia Pacific Division requires attendance at the AVS orientation at the Thailand Mission, 12 Soi Pridi Panomyong 37, Sukhumvit 71 Klongtan Nua, Wattana, Bangkok 10110 Thailand (July 16-20, 2020). School preparation begins July 27, 2020 in Dili, Timor-Leste.
